Disabled children in 'poor homes'

More than half of parents complained of lack o

Nine out of 10 families with disabled children live in unsuitable housing, says a report by the charity Every Disabled Child Matters.

More than half of the families questioned in a survey said a lack of space was a major problem.

Nearly 3,000 parents in England took part in the survey, carried out by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The charities want a coordinated effort from government and housing departments to help families in need.

The survey, the first of its kind, looked at the housing needs of disabled children and their families in addition to interviewing housing associations, social care and occupational therapy practitioners.

The proportions of the kitchen or bathroom were mentioned by 42% of respondents as making them difficult to use.

More than a quarter said that the general condition of their home was inadequate.

The research suggests disabled children are more likely to live in inappropriate housing than disabled adults.

In May 2007, the Treasury and Department for Children, Schools and Family launched a programme, Aiming High for Disabled Children, designed to improve access and support to disabled children, but the housing needs of families was not covered.

Every Disabled Child Matters spokeswoman, Srabani Sen said: "Families with disabled children are amongst the most vulnerable in this country.

"Yet too many families are not getting the financial and practical support they need to adapt their homes and are forced to live in overcrowded and unsuitable properties."
